What Does the Bible Say About Grief and Loss?

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Jesus blesses the grieving — and promises comfort is coming.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.

The final destination — grief is real now, but it has a last day.

Jesus wept.

The shortest verse in the Bible — and one of the most powerful. Jesus weeps with us.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Our pain becomes the resource through which we minister to others.

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Not even death — the final grief — can break God's hold on us.

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

Dark seasons are real — and they are not forever.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering, and acquainted with grief.

Jesus knew sorrow from the inside — He is not distant from our pain.

You have taken account of my wanderings. You put my tears in your bottle. Aren't they in your book?

God keeps record of every tear — nothing in our grief is unnoticed.

Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come back with shouts of joy, carrying his sheaves.

Grief is not the end of the story — harvest comes after the weeping.

It is because of Yahweh's loving kindness that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Written from the ashes of Jerusalem — hope that survives the worst.

But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

Christians grieve differently — with hope of resurrection reunion.

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weakness, for we don't know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered.

When grief steals our words, the Spirit speaks for us.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

When body and heart give out — God remains the eternal portion.

Don't let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father's house are many homes. If it weren't so, I would have told you.

Jesus addresses grief over loss directly — with the promise of eternal home.

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

God is not merely a comforter — He actively heals the broken heart.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you.

God does not promise dry paths — He promises wet paths with His presence.

Don't be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.

Even in communal grief, God calls His people to the joy that is their strength.

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

Jesus invites the grieving — rest is available in Him.

For he has not despised nor scorned the affliction of the afflicted; neither has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard.

God does not despise our weakness — He hears our cry from it.

to give to those who mourn in Zion a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness.

God exchanges the heavy garment of grief for praise — He is a God who restores.
